The Grand Cayman Islands are a traveler’s paradise. Gorgeous waters, lush tropical feel, amazing food, and drink, it is a destination worth the time it takes to get there…and more. The Grand Cayman also offers many wonderful things to see and do. From Seven Mile Beach to the Cayman’s amazing snorkeling and diving. There is something for everyone. But one of the best experiences the Grand Cayman has to offer is Stingray City.

Billed as the most popular attraction in the Cayman Islands, Stingray City hosts nearly 1,500 tourists per day. As the cruise ships arrive, the Stingray City population rises. Tourists making the Cayman Island their vacation home also find their way to Stingray City.

The “City” is actually a very shallow sandbar (on average measuring three to five feet in depth) situated in the North Sound area of Grand Cayman. The only way to reach it is by boat and there are various companies that will take you to this beautiful destination. Depending on your tour (there are plenty of tour packages which include Stingray City as a stop), plan to spend anywhere from two hours to half a day out on the water.

The ride out to the City lasts about 20 minutes, during which, you will be given complete instructions on how to swim with the stingrays. Your safety is paramount as is the safety of the stingrays and their habitat. Once there, your adventure truly begins. The City harbors nearly 50 Southern stingrays, sometimes that number does increase. A typical Southern Stingray will weigh nearly 150 pounds and measure about five feet in width. They are a gentle creature as they swim the city.

While there, you will have the opportunity to feed the stingray. You will first be taught how to approach the stingray, and the proper do’s and don’t’s while moving about. From there you will be given a small fish or possibly a piece of squid and then the fun of feeding a stingray. The experience is an amazing one as the stingrays gently swim around you.

Stingray City’s reputation as the Grand Cayman’s most popular attraction does not let down. If you want to be close to all the action, consider staying at The Residences Seven Mile Beach and their luxury Cayman vacation rentals.
